Frequently asked questions

How is the IELTS overall band calculated?

The overall band is the average of your Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking bands, rounded to the nearest half band. An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band. For example, 6.25 becomes 6.5 and 6.75 becomes 7.

How is the Writing band calculated?

Task 1 and Task 2 are each marked on four criteria. Task 2 counts for twice as much as Task 1 in your Writing band.

Are these conversion tables official?

No. They are approximate tables based on commonly published guidance. The exact number of correct answers needed for each band can vary slightly between test versions.
