Family: IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that adult children should look after their elderly parents in their own homes, while others think that professional care homes are a better option. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Question type: Discuss both views · Write at least 250 words · About 40 minutes

How to approach it

This question compares two ways of caring for older people, so each body paragraph should explain one option and why its supporters prefer it. Your opinion should be clear and may depend on the parent's health needs. Avoid emotional generalisations and support each point with a reason or example.

Suggested outline

  1. Intro: paraphrase both views and give your opinion, e.g. family care is ideal where possible, but professional care is better for serious medical needs.
  2. Body 1: care at home - emotional support and familiar surroundings, closer bonds with grandchildren, a cultural sense of duty, and lower costs.
  3. Body 2: care homes - trained staff and round-the-clock medical attention, social activities with people of a similar age, and less pressure on working adults.
  4. Conclusion: restate your opinion that the choice should depend on the level of care needed.

View one

  • Older people often feel loved and secure with their families
  • Grandparents and grandchildren can build close relationships
  • Many cultures see caring for parents as a moral duty

View two

  • Care homes provide trained staff and medical equipment
  • Working adults may not have time to give full-time care
  • Residents can make friends and join group activities

Band 7+ vocabulary

  • elderly relatives – older members of the family
  • residential care – care given in a home where older people live
  • round-the-clock care – care available 24 hours a day
  • a sense of obligation – a feeling that you must do something
  • intergenerational relationships – relationships between people of different ages
  • caregiver burnout – extreme tiredness from caring for someone
  • age-related conditions – health problems that are common in old age

Common mistakes on this question

  • Treating all care homes as bad or all families as perfect, which makes the argument one-sided.
  • Writing 'the olds' instead of 'older people' or 'the elderly'.
  • Writing about old age in general instead of who should provide the care.

There is debate about whether elderly parents should be cared for by their adult children at home or in professional care homes. My view is that family care is the ideal arrangement whenever it is possible, but that a care home is the better choice when an older person has serious medical needs.

Caring for elderly relatives at home has many advantages. Older people usually feel happier and more secure in familiar surroundings, with the people they love nearby, and this emotional support can be as important to their well-being as any medicine. Living together also brings the generations closer, as grandchildren grow up knowing their grandparents well and learning from their experience. In many cultures, children feel a strong sense of obligation to look after the parents who once looked after them, and fulfilling this duty can be deeply rewarding. Home care is often less expensive than a place in a care home as well.

On the other hand, professional care has advantages that a family cannot always match. Care homes provide trained staff and round-the-clock care, which is essential for someone with advanced dementia or a condition that requires frequent medical attention. They also organise activities and allow residents to spend time with people of their own generation, which can reduce loneliness. Moreover, when adult children work full-time and have young families of their own, caring for a parent with complex needs can lead to caregiver burnout, damaging both the health of the carer and the quality of care provided.

In conclusion, I believe the decision should depend on the level of care an older person needs. Where parents are relatively healthy and their children have time to help, living with the family is the best option, but where professional medical support is required, a good care home is the more responsible choice.
