Media: IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people think that news programmes and websites should report more positive stories, while others believe their main job is to inform people about problems and dangers. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Question type: Discuss both views · Write at least 250 words · About 40 minutes

How to approach it

Explain why some people want more positive news and why others believe reporting problems is the main purpose of the media. Give each view a developed paragraph, then make your own opinion clear. A balanced opinion is acceptable if you explain exactly what balance you mean.

Suggested outline

  1. Intro: paraphrase both views and give your opinion, e.g. reporting problems is the main duty, but positive and solution-focused stories deserve more space.
  2. Body 1: why more positive news - constant bad news causes anxiety and hopelessness, gives a distorted picture of the world, and positive stories can inspire people to act.
  3. Body 2: why problems come first - the public needs warnings about risks, and journalists hold governments and companies accountable, e.g. reports that reveal unsafe products.
  4. Conclusion: restate your opinion.

View one

  • Constant negative news can increase stress and anxiety
  • It can give people an unfairly negative view of the world
  • Stories of success can motivate people to help others

View two

  • People need information about dangers to protect themselves
  • Investigative reporting holds powerful people accountable
  • Choosing only positive stories could become a form of censorship

Band 7+ vocabulary

  • news coverage – the reporting of events in the media
  • hold someone accountable – make someone take responsibility for their actions
  • investigative journalism – reporting that researches hidden problems in depth
  • a distorted view – an image of something that is not accurate
  • in the public interest – important for people in general to know about
  • sensationalism – presenting news in a shocking way to attract attention

Common mistakes on this question

  • Writing about fake news or social media, which is a different question.
  • Not giving an opinion, or giving one that contradicts the body paragraphs.
  • Treating 'news' as plural ('the news are'), when it takes a singular verb.

Some people believe that news organisations should give more attention to positive stories, while others argue that their main role is to warn the public about problems and dangers. I think reporting problems should remain the central duty of the media, but that hopeful and solution-focused stories deserve more space than they currently receive.

Those who call for more positive news have a point. Many people now see headlines all day on their phones, and a constant stream of disasters, crimes and conflicts can leave them anxious and convinced that nothing can be improved. This kind of news coverage may also give a distorted view of the world, since gradual improvements, such as better access to clean water in a region or a successful local recycling project, are rarely considered dramatic enough to report. Positive stories can show that problems are solvable and may even encourage readers to volunteer or support a cause.

Nevertheless, the main purpose of journalism is to inform people about matters that are in the public interest, and these are frequently negative. Citizens need to know about approaching storms, outbreaks of illness or rising crime in their area so that they can protect themselves. Equally important is the media's role in holding governments and companies to account. A reporter who discovers, for instance, that a popular children's toy contains dangerous chemicals can cause the product to be withdrawn and prevent serious harm. If news outlets avoided such stories in order to keep audiences cheerful, they would fail in their most important responsibility.

In conclusion, I believe that the news should continue to focus on problems, because the public cannot respond to dangers it does not know about. However, reporting more stories about how problems are being solved would give a more accurate and less discouraging picture of the world.
