Society: IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many modern cities, people hardly know their neighbours and there is little sense of community. What are the causes of this problem and what measures could be taken to solve it?

Question type: Problem and solution · Write at least 250 words · About 40 minutes

How to approach it

Explain why people have weaker connections with their neighbours, then suggest practical ways to strengthen community life. Each solution should respond to one of your causes. A clear structure with one body paragraph for causes and one for solutions works well.

Suggested outline

  1. Intro: paraphrase the problem and preview the causes and solutions.
  2. Body 1: causes - long working hours and commutes, people moving home often, social life and entertainment moving online, and apartment buildings with few shared spaces.
  3. Body 2: solutions - local events and community centres, housing designed with shared gardens and common rooms, and encouragement for local volunteering and clubs.
  4. Conclusion: summarise the causes and solutions.

Causes / problems

  • Long working hours leave little time for neighbours
  • People move house frequently, especially those who rent
  • Entertainment and social life increasingly happen online

Solutions

  • Local councils organising street events and festivals
  • Housing designed with shared gardens and common rooms
  • Encouraging local volunteering and clubs

Band 7+ vocabulary

  • communal spaces – areas shared by everyone in a building or neighbourhood

Common mistakes on this question

  • Describing village life in the past nostalgically instead of explaining clear causes.

  • Mixing British and American spellings, such as 'neighbour' and 'neighbor', in the same essay.

In many modern cities, residents may live next door to someone for years without knowing their name, and a sense of community is often missing. The main reasons are busy lifestyles, frequent moves and the design of urban housing, yet there are practical ways to bring neighbours closer together.

One major cause is the pace of urban life. Many people work long hours and spend a further hour or two commuting, so they leave home early and return late, with little time or energy to talk to the people around them. People also move home more often than in the past, usually for work, and they have little motivation to build relationships in an area they expect to leave within a year or two. In addition, much social life and entertainment now takes place online, so people can chat with friends across the city or watch films without leaving their flat. Finally, many apartment blocks are designed with long corridors and no shared spaces, so residents only meet briefly in the lift.

Several measures could help to address this. Local councils could organise regular events, such as street markets, festivals and sports days, and fund community centres where residents can attend classes or simply meet for coffee. Architects and planners could also design new housing with communal spaces, such as shared gardens, rooftop terraces and common rooms, which encourage casual conversations between neighbours. Encouraging local volunteering and clubs, for example a neighbourhood gardening group or a scheme in which younger residents help elderly neighbours with their shopping, would also foster connections and reduce social isolation.

In conclusion, the weak sense of community in modern cities results from busy lifestyles, frequent moves, online leisure and poor building design. Local events, better housing design and volunteering opportunities could help residents feel part of their neighbourhood again.
