Society: IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries, people are choosing to have children later in life than in the past. Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

Question type: Advantages and disadvantages · Write at least 250 words · About 40 minutes

How to approach it

Think about the effects on parents, children and society, then decide which side is stronger. Give a clear judgement early and support it in the body paragraphs. Avoid personal advice about when someone should have children, and keep the discussion general.

Suggested outline

  1. Intro: paraphrase the statement and state that the advantages slightly outweigh the disadvantages.
  2. Body 1: the disadvantages - some couples find it harder to conceive, parents may have less energy for young children, children have fewer years with grandparents, and birth rates fall.
  3. Body 2: the advantages - older parents are often more financially stable and emotionally mature, and they have usually finished their education and established careers.
  4. Conclusion: restate your judgement.

Advantages

  • Older parents often have more stable incomes and housing
  • Parents may be more mature and patient
  • People can complete their education and build careers first

  • Some couples may find it harder to have children
  • Children may have less time with their grandparents
  • Lower birth rates can lead to an ageing population

In many countries, people are waiting longer than previous generations before they start a family. Although this trend has some genuine disadvantages, I believe that the advantages slightly outweigh them.

The drawbacks of delaying parenthood are both personal and social. Some couples who wait until their late thirties or forties find it more difficult to conceive, which can lead to expensive medical treatment and considerable disappointment. Older parents may also have less physical energy for the sleepless nights and constant activity that come with very young children. Their children, in turn, may have fewer years with their grandparents, losing an important source of love and support. At the level of society, people who become parents later often have fewer children overall, so the number of births falls. Over time, this leaves fewer young workers paying the taxes that fund pensions and health care for a growing number of retired people.

On the other hand, there are significant benefits for both parents and children. People who have their first child in their thirties have usually completed their education and had time to establish a career, so they are more likely to enjoy financial stability. This means they can provide a secure home, afford a healthy diet and activities for their children, and worry less about money. Older parents also tend to have greater emotional maturity; having already faced some of life's challenges, they may respond more calmly to the stresses of raising a family and be better prepared to set clear and consistent rules. A child raised in a stable household by patient parents is likely to benefit in many ways.

In conclusion, while later parenthood creates certain difficulties, particularly for fertility and population growth, I believe the greater stability and maturity that older parents can offer make it a slightly more positive development overall.
