Technology: IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many countries, people now pay for most goods and services with cards and smartphones, and cash is used less and less. Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

Question type: Advantages and disadvantages · Write at least 250 words · About 40 minutes

How to approach it

You need to weigh the benefits of digital payment against its drawbacks and give a clear judgement. A strong answer explains why one side matters more, for example because of who is affected. Cover both sides, but make sure your final position is obvious.

Suggested outline

  1. Intro: paraphrase the statement and state your judgement, e.g. the advantages outweigh the disadvantages as long as cash remains available.
  2. Body 1: the disadvantages - older people and those without bank accounts may be excluded, there is a risk of fraud and system failures, and it is easier to overspend.
  3. Body 2: the advantages - speed and convenience, spending records that help with budgeting, less cash-related crime, and payments that are easier to trace for tax purposes.
  4. Conclusion: restate your judgement and the condition attached to it.

Advantages

  • Payments are faster and more convenient
  • Digital records make it easier to track spending
  • Carrying less cash can reduce street robbery
  • Digital payments are easier for tax authorities to trace

Disadvantages

  • Older people and people without bank accounts may be excluded
  • Online fraud and data theft are growing risks
  • Technical failures can stop people paying for essentials
  • People may overspend when they do not see physical money

Band 7+ vocabulary

  • a cashless society – a society where people rarely use notes and coins
  • contactless payment – paying by holding a card or phone near a reader
  • financial inclusion – access to banking and payment services for everyone
  • cyber fraud – crime that uses the internet to steal money
  • keep track of spending – know how much money you are using
  • be excluded from – be prevented from taking part in something

Common mistakes on this question

  • Writing about online shopping instead of the way people pay.
  • Not stating which side outweighs the other.
  • Treating 'money' as a countable noun, for example 'many moneys'.

In many parts of the world, cards and mobile phones have largely replaced notes and coins as the normal way to pay. In my view, the advantages of this trend outweigh the disadvantages, as long as cash remains available for those who need it.

There are certainly some drawbacks. Older people who are not comfortable with technology, and those who have no bank account, risk being excluded from everyday activities such as buying a bus ticket or paying for parking if cash is no longer accepted. Digital payments also create new risks: online criminals can empty a bank account in minutes, and a technical failure at a bank or payment provider can leave thousands of customers unable to buy groceries. Some people also find it easier to overspend when they simply tap a card, because they never see money physically leaving their wallet.

However, the benefits are greater. Contactless payment is fast and convenient; a customer can pay for a coffee in seconds without searching for change, and shops no longer need to count cash at the end of the day. Digital transactions also leave a record, which allows people to keep track of spending through banking apps and to see clearly where their money goes each month. Furthermore, when businesses hold less cash, there are fewer opportunities for robbery, and because electronic payments are easier to trace, it becomes harder for companies to hide income and avoid paying tax. These gains affect almost everyone, every day.

In conclusion, I believe that the move towards a cashless society is largely positive. Nevertheless, governments should protect vulnerable groups by requiring essential services to continue accepting cash, so that the convenience enjoyed by the majority does not come at the expense of those who are least able to adapt.
