Work: IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Many companies now allow their employees to work from home for part of the working week. Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

Question type: Advantages and disadvantages · Write at least 250 words · About 40 minutes

How to approach it

This question asks you to compare advantages and disadvantages and then judge which are more important. You must give a clear answer to 'Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?', ideally in both the introduction and the conclusion. Listing both sides without a judgement is a common reason for a lower Task Response score.

Suggested outline

  1. Intro: paraphrase the statement and state that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
  2. Body 1: the disadvantages - weaker teamwork, less informal learning for new staff, and difficulty separating work from home life.
  3. Body 2: the advantages - no daily commute on home days, better focus for individual tasks, more time with family, and lower office costs for companies.
  4. Conclusion: restate that the benefits are greater, especially when office days are used for teamwork and training.

Advantages

  • Employees save time and money on commuting
  • A quiet home setting can improve focus on individual tasks
  • Companies can reduce office costs
  • A better work-life balance can increase job satisfaction

Disadvantages

  • Teamwork and quick communication become harder
  • New employees learn less from watching experienced colleagues
  • Some people find it hard to switch off from work at home

Band 7+ vocabulary

  • hybrid working – dividing working time between home and the office
  • work-life balance – a healthy division of time between your job and personal life
  • a daily commute – the regular journey to and from work
  • boost productivity – increase the amount of work done
  • face-to-face interaction – meeting and talking in person
  • overhead costs – regular business costs such as rent and electricity
  • a sense of isolation – a feeling of being alone or cut off from others

Common mistakes on this question

  • Describing advantages and disadvantages but never saying which outweighs the other.
  • Writing about working from home every day, when the question says part of the week.
  • Giving a different judgement in the conclusion from the one in the introduction.

Many employers now let staff work from home for part of the week instead of coming to the office every day. Although this arrangement has some drawbacks, I believe its advantages clearly outweigh them.

The disadvantages of hybrid working should not be ignored. When colleagues spend fewer days together, teamwork can suffer, since quick conversations that solve problems in minutes may turn into long chains of emails. New employees are particularly affected, as they learn a great deal informally by listening to experienced colleagues and asking questions at the next desk, and much of this face-to-face interaction is lost at home. In addition, some people find it difficult to separate their job from their private life when their kitchen table is also their office, and those who live alone may feel cut off from others.

Nevertheless, the benefits are more significant. On home days, employees avoid a daily commute that can take an hour or more in each direction, saving time, money and energy that can be spent with their families or on exercise. Many workers also find that tasks requiring deep concentration, such as writing reports or analysing data, are easier to complete away from the noise and interruptions of an open-plan office. For parents in particular, the flexibility to be at home when children return from school greatly improves their work-life balance. Companies gain as well, because if fewer staff are in the building each day, they can rent smaller offices and spend less on rent and electricity.

In conclusion, I believe that the advantages of partly working from home outweigh the disadvantages. This is especially true when organisations plan their office days carefully and use them for teamwork, meetings and training, while leaving focused individual tasks for the days at home.
