Education: IELTS Writing Task 2 question

More and more students are choosing to take courses online instead of attending classes in person. Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

Question type: Advantages and disadvantages · Write at least 250 words · About 40 minutes

How to approach it

Weigh the benefits of online courses against the drawbacks and give a clear overall judgement. You can make your judgement depend on the type of learner or subject, as long as it is easy to follow. Keep comparing online study with classroom study, because that comparison is the heart of the question.

Suggested outline

  1. Intro: paraphrase the statement and give a judgement, e.g. the advantages outweigh the disadvantages for adult and self-motivated learners.
  2. Body 1: the disadvantages - less interaction, difficulty staying motivated, practical subjects that need hands-on training, and unreliable internet in some areas.
  3. Body 2: the advantages - flexible timing for working adults, lower costs, access to courses from other countries, and lessons that can be replayed.
  4. Conclusion: restate your judgement.

Advantages

  • Learners can study at their own pace and time
  • It is often cheaper, with no travel or accommodation costs
  • Students can access courses from universities abroad

Disadvantages

  • There is less face-to-face contact with teachers and classmates
  • Strong self-discipline is needed to stay motivated
  • Practical subjects such as nursing need hands-on training

Band 7+ vocabulary

  • distance learning – studying without attending a school or university in person
  • self-discipline – the ability to control yourself and keep working
  • at their own pace – at the speed that suits them

  • peer interaction – communication with classmates
  • a stable internet connection – internet access that works reliably
  • a flexible schedule – a timetable that can change to suit you

Common mistakes on this question

  • Listing points for both sides without explaining them or giving examples.
  • Not making clear whether the advantages or the disadvantages are greater.

An increasing number of students are taking courses online rather than attending lessons in a classroom. In my view, the advantages of this trend outweigh the disadvantages, particularly for adults and for learners who are able to motivate themselves.

Distance learning does have some clear weaknesses. Studying alone at a screen reduces contact with classmates, and students lose the chance to discuss ideas spontaneously, ask quick questions or form friendships that support them through difficult periods. Without the routine of attending class, many learners also struggle to stay motivated, and it takes considerable self-discipline to watch lectures and complete assignments when nobody is checking. In addition, some subjects, such as nursing, engineering or cookery, require hands-on experience that cannot be fully provided online. Finally, in rural areas or poorer regions, students may not have reliable internet access, which makes online study frustrating or even impossible.

Nevertheless, the benefits are considerable. Online courses allow people to learn at their own pace and fit study around other responsibilities. A parent working full-time, for example, could complete an accounting qualification during evenings and weekends, which would be very difficult with fixed classroom hours. Online study is often cheaper as well, since students save on travel and accommodation, and some courses charge lower fees. Learners can also enrol in courses offered by institutions in other countries without moving abroad, and recorded lessons can be replayed as many times as necessary until a difficult topic is understood.

In conclusion, although online learning is less suitable for young students and practical subjects, I believe its advantages are greater overall. For adults who need to study around work and family and are prepared to work independently, it offers opportunities that traditional classes simply cannot match.
