Technology: IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Children today spend many hours a day looking at screens, such as phones, tablets and computers. Why is this the case? Is this a positive or negative development?
Question type: Two-part question · Write at least 250 words · About 40 minutes
How to approach it
The first question asks for reasons and the second asks for your evaluation, so your essay needs both an explanation and a clear judgement. Answer 'positive or negative' directly; you may say it is mainly negative with some benefits. Do not spend most of your words on only one of the two questions.
Suggested outline
- Intro: paraphrase the situation and give brief answers, e.g. screens are now central to school and entertainment, and the trend is largely negative.
- Body 1: reasons - schoolwork has moved online, devices are cheap and content is endless, busy parents use screens to keep children occupied, and friends communicate online.
- Body 2: evaluation - negative effects on sleep, physical activity and concentration; educational benefits exist, but they do not require many hours a day.
- Conclusion: restate both answers.

Children today spend a large part of each day using phones, tablets and computers. This is largely because screens have become central to both schoolwork and entertainment, and in my view the trend is mostly negative.
There are several reasons for the increase in children's screen time. Firstly, much schoolwork has moved online, so pupils use laptops for research and homework. Secondly, devices have become cheaper and more widely available, and their content is endless; video platforms and games suggest something new as soon as one item finishes. Busy parents also play a role. After a long working day, many find that a tablet is the easiest way to keep a child quiet while they cook or work, so parental supervision of what children watch may be limited. Finally, children increasingly communicate with their friends through messaging apps and online games, so staying offline can mean feeling left out.
Although screens bring some benefits, I believe the overall effect is harmful. Children who use devices late in the evening often sleep less, and poor sleep affects their mood and performance at school. Hours spent in front of a screen also contribute to a sedentary lifestyle, replacing the outdoor games and sport that are essential for healthy development. Moreover, constantly switching between short videos and notifications may shorten children's attention span, making it harder for them to concentrate on a book or a lesson. It is true that well-designed learning apps can help children practise a language or understand science, but these benefits require far less than an hour a day and do not justify the many hours that children typically spend online.
In conclusion, children use screens heavily because of school demands, easy access and social pressure. While some use is valuable, the current level is largely negative for their health and concentration.
