Work: IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many countries, people are working longer hours than they did in the past. Why is this happening? Is this a positive or negative development?
Question type: Two-part question · Write at least 250 words · About 40 minutes
How to approach it
Explain the reasons for longer working hours in one paragraph, then evaluate the trend in another. Your evaluation should be a clear position, such as 'mainly negative', supported with effects on health, families or productivity. Answer both questions with similar detail.
Suggested outline
- Intro: paraphrase the situation and give brief answers to both questions.
- Body 1: reasons - a rising cost of living, competition for jobs and promotions, and phones and email that make workers reachable after hours.
- Body 2: evaluation - mainly negative: exhaustion, health problems and less family time, while longer hours do not always mean more output; some people do gain higher pay or faster promotion.
- Conclusion: restate both answers.
Ideas for part one

In many countries, people now spend more hours at work than previous generations did. This is mainly the result of financial pressure, competition and technology, and in my opinion it is a largely negative development.
Several factors explain this trend. The first is the rising cost of living. As rents, food and transport become more expensive, many employees take on extra shifts or a second job simply to cover their basic expenses. Secondly, competition for jobs and promotions has intensified, and in some industries there is a long-hours culture in which staying late is seen as proof of commitment; employees who leave on time may worry that they will be viewed as less ambitious than their colleagues. Thirdly, technology has blurred the boundary between work and home. Because smartphones allow people to receive emails at any time, many workers feel that they must be on call in the evenings and at weekends, even if they are not paid for this time.
I believe the effects of this change are mostly harmful. Working long hours over months or years can lead to exhaustion and burnout, as well as health problems such as poor sleep, back pain and heart disease. It also reduces the time people can spend with their families, so parents may miss important moments in their children's lives. Furthermore, longer hours do not necessarily mean more output, since tired employees make more mistakes and often work more slowly. Admittedly, some individuals benefit, earning higher pay or faster promotion in return for their extra effort, but these gains frequently come at a high personal cost.
In conclusion, people are working longer because of financial needs, workplace competition and constant connectivity. While a few may gain financially, this trend is mostly negative for workers' health, their families and even their employers.
