Task 2 questions › Environment
Environment: IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Many people now buy new clothes very often and throw them away after wearing them only a few times. Why do people do this? What effects does this have on the environment?
Question type: Two-part question · Write at least 250 words · About 40 minutes
How to approach it
A two-part question contains two direct questions, and you must answer both with similar depth. Here, one body paragraph can explain the reasons for the behaviour and the other can explain the environmental effects. Use the question words as a guide: 'why' needs reasons, and 'what effects' needs consequences.
Suggested outline
- Intro: paraphrase the situation and briefly answer both questions.
- Body 1: reasons - very low prices, constantly changing trends promoted on social media, cheap clothes that wear out quickly, and shopping as a form of entertainment.
- Body 2: environmental effects - large amounts of textile waste in landfill, heavy use of water and energy in production, and pollution from dyes and synthetic fibres.
- Conclusion: summarise both answers.
Ideas for part one
- Clothes are cheaper than ever before
- Trends change quickly, especially on social media
- Low-quality clothes wear out after a few washes
Ideas for part two
- Huge amounts of clothing end up in landfill
- Making clothes uses large amounts of water and energy
- Dyes and synthetic fibres pollute rivers and seas
Band 7+ vocabulary
- fast fashion – cheap clothing made quickly to follow new trends
- textile waste – thrown-away clothes and fabric
- end up in landfill – finally be buried at a rubbish site
- disposable clothing – clothes treated as if they are meant to be thrown away
- keep up with trends – follow the newest fashions
- carbon footprint – the amount of greenhouse gas caused by an activity
- synthetic fibres – man-made materials such as polyester
Common mistakes on this question
- Answering 'why' and 'what effects' in the same paragraph, so the ideas become mixed.
- Adding a long section on solutions, which the question does not ask for.
- Giving one question much more space than the other.

Many people today buy new clothes frequently and throw them away after only a few uses. This is mainly because clothing has become very cheap and trends change constantly, and the result is serious harm to the environment through waste, resource use and pollution.
There are several reasons for this behaviour. The most important is price. The fast fashion industry produces clothes in huge quantities at such low cost that a T-shirt can cost less than a cup of coffee, so buyers feel little guilt about replacing it. Trends also change faster than ever before. Social media constantly shows influencers and celebrities in new outfits, and many young people feel pressure to keep up with trends and avoid being photographed in the same clothes twice. Cheap garments are also often poorly made, so they lose their shape or colour after a few washes, which encourages people to replace them rather than repair them. Finally, shopping itself has become a form of entertainment for many people, whether in shopping centres or online late at night.
The effects on the environment are considerable. Huge quantities of unwanted clothing end up in landfill, where synthetic fibres such as polyester can take hundreds of years to break down. Production also requires enormous amounts of water and energy; growing the cotton for a single pair of jeans uses a great deal of water, and many factories run on fossil fuels. In addition, the dyes and chemicals used in manufacturing are often released into rivers, and tiny plastic fibres from synthetic clothes are washed into the sea every time they go through a washing machine.
In conclusion, people buy and discard clothes so quickly because they are cheap, fashionable and quickly worn out. This habit produces large amounts of waste and pollution and uses up valuable natural resources.
